Switching Power Supply Is Different From Linear Power Supply

The power supply can be divided into two linear power supplies and switching power supplies according to the working principle, and the following is a brief introduction to the two power supplies.
 

Linear Power Supply

The linear power supply is designed so that it uses a transformer to bring down the input voltage. Then, the voltage is made into direct current by rectifying it. After that, this direct current voltage is filtered to make the waveform nicer. Linear power supplies use linear regulators to keep the output voltage constant. These linear regulators get rid of any extra energy by making heat.

 

Switching Power Supply

The design of a switching power supply is a newer way that came about to deal with a lot of the problems with linear power supply design, like transformer size and voltage regulation. In switching power supply designs, the input voltage isn't reduced in the usual way. Instead, it's rectified and filtered at the input. Then, the voltage goes through a chopper thing that turns it into a high-frequency pulse train. Before it gets to the output, the voltage is filtered and rectified again.

A switched-mode power supply (SMPS), also called switching-mode power supply, switch-mode power supply, switched power supply, or simply switcher, is an electronic power supply .

  • Switching power supplies, like other power supplies, take power from DC or AC power supplies and provide it to a DC load, while obtaining power and changing the characteristics of voltage and current. Unlike linear power supplies, SMPS 'through-tube always switches between full on and full off with low dissipation. It spends almost no time in a highly dissipative transition state. In this way, the switching power supply will waste less energy. A linear power supply, on the other hand, controls the output voltage by continuously dissipating power in the through-tube. Switching power supplies with high electrical efficiency are a very important advantage.

 

  • Switching power supplies are definitely smaller and lighter compared to linear power supplies.   Know why? Because the transformer in a switching power supply is very small! And that's because it works at a really high switching frequency. This frequency can range from several hundred kHz to several MHz. In contrast, the transformer in a linear power supply uses the mains frequency of either 50 or 60 Hz. Despite the reduced transformer size, the power supply topology and electromagnetic compatibility requirements in commercial designs result in a usually much greater component count and corresponding circuit complexity.

  • Switching regulators are used as replacements for linear regulators when higher efficiency, smaller size or lighter weight is required. They are, however, more complicated; Switching currents can cause electrical noise problems if not carefully suppressed, and simple designs may have a poor power factor.
