The power adapters of some electronic devices with high safety requirements, high power or specific electrical performance requirements often use three-pin plug. For example, the power adapters of computers, printers, projectors and other equipment can use three-pin plug to connect the metal shell of the equipment to the ground wire. When a leakage fault occurs inside the equipment, the current will be introduced into the earth through the ground wire.
The three-pin plug has three pins which are the live pin, neutral pin and the earth pin. Compared to the two-pin plug, they include an additional grounding pin, which is connected to the electrical system’s ground wire. This pin is positioned below the hot and neutral pins and does not carry current under normal conditions. The earth pin is a safety feature designed to direct stray electricity away from the appliance in case of a fault, short circuit, or surge. It channels excess current to the ground, preventing electrocution, electrical fires, and damage to the appliance. Today, three-slot receptacles are commonly required in new construction for added safety.
Three-pronged plugs are typically used for high-power appliances such as industrial machinery, and sensitive electronics. They are also essential for devices housed in metal casings, like computers and game consoles, where stray electricity could potentially cause shock. The grounding pin helps to safely redirect any stray current away from users.
Why is earth pin thicker and longer in a 3-pin plug?
First, as we can see, among these three pins (live, neutral and earth), the earth pin is made longer and thicker than the other two pins so that when we insert the plug into the socket, the earth pin comes into contact with the power supply before the other two pins, this is because if any unwanted charges are there then they will be removed before the other two pins will go inside the terminals. This will ensure that if we connect the earth first then that will increase our safety and the device's safety if any fault occurs.
Second, to prevent the wrong way to operate a 3-pin plug and connected electrical machine for the safety purpose. In other words, 3-Pin plug wont be connect to the socket upside down as the earth pin is thicker, so it won’t adjust and fit in another slot made for Neutral or Live Pin in the socket. In short, The earth pin is bigger and it can not be inserted in the live or neutral slot of the socket even by mistake.
